Fact #287: Happy Easter!

Today's one of those days I wish I lived closer to home -- or home away from home, aka Minneapolis. Easter is a holiday that's best celebrated with family.

It's not really a big enough holiday to warrant a plane trip home, but it would have been fun to hide eggs in the backyard for my niece and nephew! (I heard there was even some re-hiding of eggs so the hunt could go on a little longer. Very sneaky.) Instead, I got to spend the day making coffee. Well, not even too much of that, actually. Mostly my coworker and I just hung out and drank the coffee ourselves.

On the upside, I did have a giant chocolate chip cookie for dinner. So I'd still call this Easter a modest success.

Fact #174: 2011 -- roughly the number of french fries I ate today

Today was the first day of the new year. So far, I'm pretty satisfied.

I started 2011 off on the right foot with a full body workout -- pulling/pushing my niece around the house in a laundry basket, then hefting the basket into the air over and over. Seriously, that was a better workout than I've gotten in a long time. No personal trainer in the world will ever motivate me more than Isla's sweet voice saying, "Again, again!"

Then, to counterbalance my workout, I spent the afternoon consuming half my body-weight in french fries and cheese covered in gravy. It was my brother and sister-in-law's second annual New Year's Day Poutine and Pints Party! Poutine is a Canadian dish -- and its three ingredients are french fries, cheese, and gravy.

Uh. Yum.

We borrowed my other brother's industrial grade french fry cutter. (Yeah, he's got an industrial grade french fry cutter! The real question is, why don't you? And why don't I??). That process in itself was another kind of workout. As you can see, slicing up dozens of potatoes takes a bit of upper body strength!

So that's it. One day of 2011 down, 364 more to go. I have very high hopes for this year. I think it's gonna be a good one.

Fact #173: Guest blogger today

I started writing a post about New Year's resolutions, but then my little niece generously offered to write it for me. Here are her words of wisdom to ring in the new year:

Thank you, Isla! I think those are sentiments none of us will soon forget.

Fact #170: Christmas is over when I say it's over!

I got an awesome gift today! And I have one more to give tomorrow. I like to make the holidays last. More cookies and eggnog? Why thank you. Don't mind if I do.

Til tomorrow.

PS. I realize that this blog post is both short and somewhat lame. I deeply apologize. Tomorrow I'll post pictures of puppies as atonement.

PPS. In the meantime, here's a picture of the awesome gift I got. These super-sweet sneakers!

Thanks secret Santa!

Fact #168: Only 364 more days til Christmas!!

Ahhhh, another successful Christmas!

Note to malls, radio stations, coffee shops, etc: you can stop playing Christmas music now.

Unless you're playing this song --

You can play that one as many times as you want.

Fact #166: It's almost heeeeere!

Tomorrow's Christmas!!!! Wheeee!!!

When I was growing up, we were allowed to pick one present to open on Christmas Eve. I'd always spend a bit of time debating between an interestingly-shaped mystery present and one that felt suspiciously like socks or underwear. (Save the boring stuff for later, or open it first...? It's a conundrum.)

Of course, now I get socks or underwear for Christmas because I actually ask for them. This is what it's like being a grownup, kids.

Til tomorrow (when Santa comes)!!

Fact #163: Okay, NOW I'm done

Yep. I'm actually, really, totally done with my Christmas shopping! I was waiting for inspiration to hit for the last few gifts, and it finally did.

Whew!

Places like wishlist.com or Amazon make it easy to find a gift you know someone wants. And I'll admit I've both requested and bought presents straight from a wishlist. It can save a lot of trouble and waiting in line to return things. :)

But despite the risk-free convenience of wishlists, sometimes I like going off the grid. I like trying to hunt down the perfect present for someone all on my own -- something they didn't ask for, something they didn't even know they wanted til they got it. It's a way of taking everything I know about a person and wrapping it up and giving it to them.

A good present is like a nickname. You can't pick one for yourself. Someone else has to pick it for you. (And hopefully it won't suck.)

Fact #161: Kiva credit!

Last February I made a loan on Kiva.org to a small business owner in Nigeria. I've gotten periodic updates on her business since then, and today I got an email telling me that she's fully repaid the loan.

The cool thing about Kiva is that every time you get a portion of your loan repaid, it goes into your Kiva account -- you can either take the money out of the account or re-lend it. So now I'm browsing the site looking for another business to lend to.

If you've got $25 (or more) burning a hole in your pocket, you can do the same thing! Tis the season!

Fact #154: Cooooookies!!!

We made Christmas cookies tonight! Yum!

This picture was taken before I scarfed down half the plate. Like I said: yum.

Happy holidays! Ho, ho, ow-my-tummy!

Fact #150: Socks socks socks

One of my favorite holiday traditions is my yearly search for the most festive pair of Christmas socks. I buy a new pair every year and I wear them with my PJs on Christmas morning while we open presents. The main goal is to find the most elaborate, overly decorated socks ever.

One of my best finds was this pair:

You might not be able to tell in this picture, but there are bells on the tops of the socks so they jingled when I walked. There's also a Santa glued on each of the big toes, and reindeer on each of the other toes. Awesome.

Also, I'm pretty sure that's not a beer I'm drinking. It seems a bit early for that. But you never know... and it would explain the look on my face.

Fact #143: Sleighbells ring, are you listenin'..?

It's Christmas-time!! Wheeeeeeee!

I like Thanksgiving. I like Halloween. But I looove Christmas. I love it. I love the cookies and the holiday music and the snow and the trees and the lights and the family visits and the stockings hung by the chimney with care.

I love counting down the days til Christmas -- although admittedly they seem to fly by more than drag by like they did when I was little.

I love squeezing as much holiday cheer as I can out of every second of every day of December.

I love buying Christmas presents. (My family does a name draw so we each get a gift for only one person. It's the best thing ever because that way I get to spend more time coming up with the perfect gift than battling crowds at the mall.)

I love soy eggnog and hot chocolate with marshmallows and spiced cider.

I love the way the holiday season makes winter fun.

*contented sigh*
