It was a nonstop White Stripes extravaganza at the coffee shop today. Because when I'm serving you coffee I also get to be your DJ, and I play what I want!!
I sort of wanted to just put that song on repeat all morning, but I restrained myself for the mental health of our customers. But it's going on my road trip playlist for sure!
I'm also in the market for some new music. It's a 23 hour drive from Pittsburgh to Houston, and I'd like to have a solid 23 hours of awesome music loaded up on my iPod before we hit the road.
Suggestions?

Fact #318: Contented sigh
I probably should have posted something before I went out for margaritas this evening...
But since I didn't, instead of writing words, I'm just going to post this.
I'm not sure Steve Martin should keep doing Cheaper by the Dozen movies, but I love his early comedy. And I love, love, love this:
Generally, I stay away from anything that even makes me think about thinking about bluegrass (things like, for example, the banjo) but this always makes me smile. It's infectious. And pretty incredible.

Fact #302: My pants can't come off fast enough
Wow, Kid Cudi. Your lyrics are so... um... how do I put this?
There's Shakespeare. And there's Kid Cudi. Everyone else should probably just go home.

Of course, I don't sing it quite as well as he does... close, but not quite.

Fact #198: Help me, help me, help me
I need new music. Badly.
I'm a few weeks into half marathon training, and I need more good music to run to!! It's like my fuel. Good songs make me run faster, bad songs make me fall off the treadmill.
So, I'm putting this question out to the universe: what awesome music should I be listening to? (Either for workouts or just for everyday listening.)
I'm open to any and all input! And if I really love your suggestion, I'll give you a prize.

Fact #168: Only 364 more days til Christmas!!
Ahhhh, another successful Christmas!
Note to malls, radio stations, coffee shops, etc: you can stop playing Christmas music now.
Unless you're playing this song --
You can play that one as many times as you want.

Fact #117: Today's playlist
Music is amazing. How does it work? How do these notes and these words strung together in this particular way make me smile, make me cry, send tingles down my spine? It's (bleep)ing incredible!! (Pardon my language.)
I love picking up new music. I even love when a song gets in my head and I have to listen to it over and over and over until my brain has fully absorbed it and can finally let it go.
For example, in the past couple days I've listened to these songs 100 times. . . each.
And now you get to have them in your head!
You're welcome. :)

Fact #97: "Because it's dull, you twit! It'll hurt more."
Anyone who knows what that quote is from will win a prize! (Or something.)
Hint: Imagine Kevin Costner not doing a British accent.
I covered a shift at the coffee shop this afternoon, and the playlist was all Spoon all the time. And I don't care if everyone hated it, because I love it!
Spoon is one of those bands I could pretty much always listen to. And I often do. I never get sick of them.
I remember listening to Spoon on the drive from Minneapolis to Chicago (the first leg of my move to Pittsburgh). I was about 10 minutes from the city. At the end of a 7 hour drive. And I'm a bad road-tripper, especially by myself. I get so antsy.
But Spoon got me through! I have all their albums on my iPod, so I hit shuffle and listened to them all the way into town.
As I was driving down Lawrence, "Jonathan Fisk" came on.
That song is that moment for me. It always will be. And I love it.

Fact #91: I'm homesick for a place that's not my actual home
I need another trip to Minneapolis.
And don't bother telling me I just had one -- I already tried telling myself that, but I'm just not buying it. I miss my people. And those darn babies! They're growing up so fast, even though I specifically keep telling them not to!
All right. I've convinced myself. Another trip to Minneapolis it is. I'll get there someway, somehow! By plane, train, or automobile! (Ooh, I sense a hilarious madcap road-trip movie in the making. . .)
PS. For your listening pleasure, here's my Song of the Day for 10/10/10:

Fact #45: My iPod knows a lot about me
Just out of curiosity, when I was updating my iPod this morning, I sorted the songs by play count. Here's what I found out:
--Top 10 Most Played Songs--
"New World Water" - Mos Def
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" - Cat Power
"I Know What I Am" - Band of Skulls
"Help I'm Alive" - Metric
"Ready for the Floor" - Hot Chip
"The General Specific" - Band of Horses
"VCR" - The XX
"Islands" - The XX
"Nicest Thing" - Kate Nash
"Low Light Low Life" - P.O.S.
--Bottom 10 Least Played Songs--
Baby 81 (the whole album)* - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
*It's an okay album, but I don't love it. All the songs have a play count of 1.
Now, bear in mind that these are not my most/least played songs of all time. I've only had this iPod for a few months, and it only has a fraction of my music library on it. But those lists definitely reflect my musical leanings over the past six months.

Fact #6: Some songs you never skip
Are there any songs that if they come up on your iPod, you never skip? If you hear them when you're flipping through stations on the radio, you always stop?
The song "General Specific" by Band of Horses is like that for me. I've listened to it a hundred times, but I'd always listen to it again.
I love that song. It's just the perfect mix of everything. It makes me a little sad, but not the bad kind of sad that twinges your heart, the good kind that makes you smile a little. It makes me want to sing along. It makes me want to roll down my window and sing along even louder. It makes me want to dance.
The lyrics don't really make much sense, but I like that too. The name of the song seems perfect - I feel like it's about something so specific that only the guy who wrote it can really understand, but somehow it also expresses a universal state.
This is my favorite line:
"Down to the general store / for nothing specific / gonna wash my bones / in the Atlantic shore."
