Fact #229: Defragmenting

My first laptop was a PC (now I have an iBook because I'm super hip). Anyways, I would occasionally run the disk defragmenter on my old laptop to make it use the hard drive more efficiently.

Since my iBook doesn't really trust me to do anything myself, it probably does this to the hard drive without telling me. Seriously, iBook, I can handle it! No? Okay.

But what I really need is a program to do this to my brain. I want my brain to be like that bottom bar, with all those nice big chunks of blue. Not like the top bar, with all those little tiny red lines all over the place.

Actually, I'm getting better at doing it for myself. Keeping all the different things I've got going on straight in my head. Narrowing my focus down to what I'm doing right now, instead of staring into the future and being overwhelmed by all the things looming in my path.

I partly credit yoga (it keeps me present). I partly credit my super creepy "Puppies Doing Yoga" wall calendar (it was a gift!!). I partly credit Steve Jobs (my iPhone mostly tells me what to do).

Either way, my brain definitely works much better when it's defragmented.

Fact #45: My iPod knows a lot about me

Just out of curiosity, when I was updating my iPod this morning, I sorted the songs by play count. Here's what I found out:

--Top 10 Most Played Songs--

"New World Water" - Mos Def
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" - Cat Power
"I Know What I Am" - Band of Skulls
"Help I'm Alive" - Metric
"Ready for the Floor" - Hot Chip
"The General Specific" - Band of Horses
"VCR" - The XX
"Islands" - The XX
"Nicest Thing" - Kate Nash
"Low Light Low Life" - P.O.S.

--Bottom 10 Least Played Songs--

Baby 81 (the whole album)* - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
*It's an okay album, but I don't love it. All the songs have a play count of 1.

Now, bear in mind that these are not my most/least played songs of all time. I've only had this iPod for a few months, and it only has a fraction of my music library on it. But those lists definitely reflect my musical leanings over the past six months.

Fact #38: Sometimes weird things make me sad

A few days ago I finally got to start using my iPhone. I canceled my account with T-Mobile and transferred my old number over.

That in itself was a fairly hilarious experience. I mean, it went amazingly smoothly. But it was a lot more complicated than I'd expected it to be, and involved a three way call between two AT&T customer service people and me. And they were extremely, eerily cheerful and polite. Add a little ominous music and it would have been the first act of a horror movie.

Remember that scene in Rosemary's Baby
where she activates her iPhone? So scary!

When they were finally about to port my old number away from my T-Mobile account, they asked if I had any voicemails I needed to listen to on my old phone -- they'd be deleted once my phone number was switched to my new phone.

I didn't have any voicemails I had to listen to. No urgent new messages. No important information to take down. But since I first got a cell phone, my voicemail box has never been totally empty. I have a habit of saving old messages: a call from a friend I rarely talk to, a message that makes me laugh, stuff like that. I keep them for a while, like the digital equivalent of holding onto old letters or cards. Just to have.

So I had a moment's hesitation before I said okay and they switched my number over. (I'm guessing they chalked the pause up to a bad connection, or else it just contributed to the 'horror movie' vibe of our conference call.)

Anyway, now I've got my new phone all set up and seriously. it. is. awesome.

But I'm not gonna lie, I was a little sad to say goodbye to my old one.

Fact #29: I just got a fancy new phone! So stop calling me.

I did it!!! Oh my lord, I totally did it. I got an iPhone!!!!!

*hyperventilates into paper bag*

Whew. Okay, I'm back.

Yep, I have an iPhone now. I'm a little late to the party, I know. I was holding out.. for one that Consumer Reports didn't recommend. Supposedly this iPhone doesn't work very well as a phone when you hold it like a phone. But I don't care! Because I'm not going to be holding it like a phone very often. I'll be too busy Googling directions, watching videos on YouTube, and playing Angry Birds to actually make any phone calls.

Plus, since I had to switch to AT&T and their plans are pricier than T-Mobile, I had to cut my minutes. I used to have 1000 a month, now I have 450! So stop calling me. Seriously.
