Fact #347: One week!

That's it. That's all I've got left. In one week, I'm leaving Pittsburgh! Yiiiiiiiiiiikes!

I'm starting to realize that even though my house is mostly empty, even though I've given notice at work, even though I've been packing and planning and apartment hunting in Houston, and reading a billion books for school, and getting my car fixed for the trip, and starting to say my goodbyes... Even though I'm quite obviously moving away... I don't think that fact is going to really sink in until I'm somewhere in the middle of Tennessee.

It's gonna be a big surprise.

Fact #343: You learn something new every day

For example, last night I went to a play and learned a whole bunch of stuff I didn't know about the Lindbergh baby and one of the prime suspects in the case, Violet Sharp.

If you live in Pittsburgh, go see this show! Do it. It's a fascinating story, and some really lovely work by the actors.

Fact #342: Pittsburgh, now I'm mad at you

Pittsburgh, what did you do to me? How did this happen?

I didn't see it coming. Two years ago, I had no idea you even existed (just kidding, my geography's a little bit better than that). But I didn't know how awesome you were. I didn't know how cool and arts-supportive and friendly you were.

I didn't know how much I was gonna love you. I didn't know how much you were gonna change me.

You picked me up and shook me, Pittsburgh. Which normally I like. But to be honest, you shook me pretty hard sometimes. And then you spun me around in circles real fast, and when you set me down I was facing towards Houston.

So now I'm a little mad at you, Pittsburgh. For making me care about you while simultaneously lighting a fire under my butt that's taking me away from you.

I'm gonna miss you, Pittsburgh. You witnessed some of my biggest growing pains, but you were nice to me anyway. I think you're kind of wonderful.

So, like John Lithgow in Harry and the Hendersons, I have to yell at you and punch you in the face to cover the sorrow of parting.

A touching moment made creepy by John Lithgow's very presence.
It's like magic.

Fact #301: I'll say this one time...

In less than two months I'm leaving to go to school in Houston. And I'm a little scared.

It's the first time I've moved anywhere totally, completely on my own. I spent a year in London during my undergrad, but that was really more of a long vacation. When I moved to Chicago I had a network of college friends. I moved to Pittsburgh with Freddie.

And now I'm moving to Texas by myself. I know friends-of-friends who've offered to help me find a place to live and show me around. And once school starts, I'll be surrounded by a group of people pretty much nonstop.

But first, the move -- so far away from everything and everyone I know. So far outside of my mid-western culture. So hot. So humid. Finding a place to live, navigating a new city. Finding a way to make it feel like home.

So it's a little scary. And I don't mind admitting that, mostly because I can immediately follow it with, "I'm a big girl. I do okay."

Besides, if I remember correctly, I wasn't all that super stoked about moving to Pittsburgh. I may have spent the first couple of months here bemoaning the fact that my 'street' was a glorified alley, mocking the nonsensical roadways and poorly placed signage that are everywhere in this city, and bitching about the fact that I couldn't buy beer from a grocery store like a normal person.

But I've come to love Pittsburgh so much. For realsies. It grew on me like a giant city-shaped wart. I'll be back, I promise. I'll be back for a latte from Big Dog, for a beer from The Library, for brunch at Zenith. Hopefully I'll be back to work with some of the great theatre companies out here. I'll be back.

But first, time to bust out the shorts and flip flops, and figure out what the hell to do with my hair in humidity.

Fact #284: A rollercoaster ride of emotions

I'm finally figuring out how to use Twitter (by which I mean, I'm probably barely scratching the surface of its usefulness).

But it did help me find out about this:

My first reaction when I saw this was, "Oh my gosh, I'm totally doing this!"

My second reaction was, "Wait a second, I'm selling my bike this weekend."

Balls.

Never fear, I'll find a way! Maybe I'll rent a bike. Maybe I won't sell mine after all. Maybe I'll just meet them at the end and have an extra beer.

Fact #277: "Will blog 277 days straight for theatre tickets"

Last night Bricolage Theatre offered local bloggers a chance to see a preview performance of their new show, Hunter Gatherers. Even though I blush bright red to even think about referring to this blog as a real blog, I think I've already made clear my love of both all things theatre and all things free. So I jumped on that deal like a starving artist on a free theatre ticket!

(PLUS, when we showed up for the play we were greeted in the lobby by Odie, one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. Puppies, free tickets, beer?? How many of my favorite things can be in one room at once? Well, maybe if they had a giant vat of froyo...)

The show was amazing! Some of it was hysterical, some of it was crazy, some of it was gross, some of it was sad. It's a pretty manic play that doesn't give the audience (or actors!) much time to catch their breath. But when those moments of quiet do come, they really hit hard.

As an actress, something I'm always trying to get better at is sitting in an uncomfortable moment. Hitting that point where it's awkward or painful or revealing or disturbing, and not keeping one hand on the railing. Not keeping up that tiny little barrier between myself and the uncomfortability (not a real word), so I could always back out if I wanted. Letting the tension settle, with no urge or obligation to cut it.

I thought they did that really well in this show, to hilarious and poignant effect.

Also, the special effects by Steve Tolin were amazing! There is (I don't think this is giving too much away) some blood in this show, and all of the stage effects and violence were really seamless.

So, in summary, go see Hunter Gatherers!! And then email me. 'Cause there are some things I want to talk about...

Fact #261: Pittsburgh bucket list

Here's what I have so far...

1. Go to the Pittsburgh zoo
2. Wander around the Mattress Factory
3. Day trip to Ohiopyle
4. Eat/drink at Bocktown Beer and Grille
5. Try every flavor of gelato at the Mulberry Creamery
6. Do something, anything on the North Side (it's like a whole different city)
7. Ride the Megabus to NYC
8. Do hill runs on Bates street
9. Drink wine and watch movies in the park
10. Go to a Pens game

What else am I missing in Pittsburgh? What should I do that I haven't done yet?

Fact #235: Eeeeeeeee!!!!

I love winning things. Bets, prizes, races, count-the-jelly-beans-in-a-jar contests.. anything, really.

Well, guess what? I just won a registration into the Pittsburgh Half Marathon!!!! Wheeee!!!!!

O.M.13.1 Miles. I'm so excited.

I guess now I better really start training. :)

Fact #137: If you run 5 miles first, you get to eat more later

(That's the theory anyway. I'm pretty sure even if I'd run a marathon this morning, I'd still be stuffed to the brim right now.)

Three weeks ago, when I signed up to run the 5-mile Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, it seemed like a brilliant idea. This morning, when I woke up at 7am on my day off to the sound of rain falling outside, it seemed like a less brilliant idea. And at 8:30, as we stood under a tent, cold and wet, watching the rain pour down and waiting for the race to start, it seemed like the dumbest idea ever.

My better (or lazier) judgment kept telling me to go home, go back to sleep, and not get up until it was time for pumpkin pie. But, in keeping with tradition, I refused to listen to my better judgment. And I'm glad I didn't! It ended up being a really fun race.

It was raining pretty hard and the temperature was in the high 30s when the race started. So I tried to dress right for the conditions. I wore lots of layers, with a good wicking Under Armour shirt as my base layer. Then another shirt. Then a light jacket, then a heavier jacket.

To keep myself dry(ish) at the start line before we started running, I poked a hole in the bottom of a trash bag and pulled it over my head like a poncho. I didn't poke arm holes though, because I was seriously freezing and I didn't want any more holes in the bag than necessary. I'm a wimp about being cold!

Wearing a trash bag at the start line is a pretty common thing for runners to do -- it keeps you warm and dry and then when you start running, you can take it off and leave it instead of having to carry it around with you like you would a jacket.

But when the race started, I realized I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to my trash bag. My toes had already gone numb and I didn't think I could stand to lose a layer. So I ran, with my arms pinned to my chest inside the bag, for about 2 miles. By that point, the exertion finally started to get my blood moving and I got some feeling back in my feet. It was still raining pretty hard, so I didn't want to ditch my bag entirely, but I didn't need it so much for warmth anymore.

So, in a moment very reminiscent of the dinner scene in Alien, I clawed armholes in the bag from the inside out. And with soaking wet shoes, two shirts, two jackets, a hat, a buff, and a trash bag on top, I ran the next 3 miles with a big ol' smile on my face.

Then I went home and went back to bed until it was time for pumpkin pie.

Fact #118: Getting to know Big Bird

Tonight we're going to an event called KA-BLAM! III: The Return of Saturday Morning. It's a fundraiser for the ToonSeum. (Which is a cartoon museum.) (Which is awesome.)

We got tickets to the VIP reception where we'll get to meet Caroll Spinney, who played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street. I didn't watch a whole bunch of Sesame Street growing up, but I always was a fan of Oscar the Grouch. I like grouches.

Anyway, since we're going to be VIP's, I figured I should put in a little effort and dress nice for the event. I'm at work all day, but I brought a cute dress to change into before the fundraiser.

BUT! I just checked the event website, and read this -- Saturday morning pajama dress is welcome and optional.

Why did I bring a dumb dress??? I wanna wear my PJs!!!!!

Sigh. Well, I'm wearing them next time, no matter what event I'm going to.

Fact #109: My Wednesday nights are now booked for the foreseeable future

We went to see The 39 Steps at City Theatre last night. I thought it was a fun show and a clever concept. I've never read the book or seen the movie, but I want to now!

There were some great moments, especially by the two guys who played most of the supporting characters. Fun choices. A lot of attention to detail. And one random bit that was so random I'm not even sure it was supposed to be funny, but it cracked me up so hard (I'd try to describe it, but you probably had to be there).

Anyway, before the show we went to my new favorite place -- Carson Street Deli -- for dinner. On the way in, we saw a sign advertising "Beer and Comfort Food", and the owner asked us if we were there for the tasting. What what?? That's not what I came for, but if there's beer and food, I'm in!

Turns out they do this every Wednesday night. Different foods paired with different beers. Last night was grilled cheese sandwiches with Dogfish Head Indian Brown, Troegs Hop Back Amber, and two others I didn't get a chance to try.

So... now I know what to do on Wednesdays.

Fact #105: What do The Lion King and Goodwill have in common?

Answer: They're both part of the great circle of life.

I'm not a big consumer. I don't really like shopping. I certainly don't do it for stress relief.

But I like shopping at Goodwill. Not only can I score some awesome stuff for super cheap, it allays some of my guilt for buying anything at all.

Sure, sometimes you have to root through a bunch of crap to find the good stuff, and sometimes it turns out there's just crap. But I love knowing that a big chunk of my wardrobe comes from a giant cycle of used and reused clothes. Things that for whatever reason the previous owner didn't want anymore, but that are a perfect fit for me.

Yesterday I pillaged the racks at Goodwill and walked away with four cute shirts, a yoga top, a sweater, and three pairs of jeans. My total: $30.96. Sweeeeet.

Thanks, Simba.

Fact #92: Pittsburgh, I like you

Today I went to the Carson Street Deli for the first time. I love finding awesome new places in Pittsburgh!

I'm a little embarrassed that I haven't been there before. It's right across the street from my yoga studio, so I've literally spent hours staring through the window, dreaming of sandwiches while I flow through yoga poses. Mmm. Sandwiches.

Anyway, I finally went in this afternoon, and got a very delicious lunch. They have lots of tasty looking things on the menu, and they use fresh local ingredients.

PLUS, they're my new favorite place to buy beer! I got a great mixed six pack! The guy stocking the beer fridge saw me browsing and recommended Dogfish Head's Burton Baton, which I'm super excited to try.

Yumbly in my tumbly.

Fact #85: Woman vs. Wild

After driving down to Washington PA for an audition today, I made a little detour into the countryside on the way back. There, I battled wits with mother nature, risking my life and foraging for my very survival!!

Actually I just picked some apples at Simmons Farm's U-Pick orchard. But I did somehow manage to wander off the 20-foot path from the barn to the orchard, stumble down a steep embankment and get lost in the woods. So I really did almost die.

But look!

I picked those! With my BARE HANDS!!!

I also picked these. Up. From a big pile of pre-harvested pumpkins. (Now I just have to decide if I should try to carve them with a butter knife or a knife from my trusty Ikea set..)

Oh, and I made a new best friend!

Fact #83: Yoga'd!

The yoga studio I've been going to, Amazing Yoga, switched (back) from being a donation based studio to having set prices for their classes. Waaahh! I'm really sad about it, and sad that their experiment of making yoga accessible regardless of income seems to have failed. They didn't even make it a year.

In the spirit of pay-what-you-can, I paid what I could. But seriously, I'm poor. I can't be going to yoga every day at $15 a class. And they just raised the rate for their monthly membership, too. Double waaah!

They do have a 'work for yoga' program where you volunteer time at the studio in exchange for classes, so I'm trying to get in on that. But in the meantime, I'm.. sigh.. resorting to yoga at home. I shove the coffee table out of the way, throw down my yoga mat in the middle of the room, and play one of the free podcasts that Amazing Yoga has on iTunes.

I'm having a little trouble though. This is how it usually goes:
AY Podcast: Come into downward dog pose. Breathe in. Breathe out.

Me: Downward dog, ok. Breathe, right. Got it. Hmm, I'm thirsty. Ooh! I should make some coffee!

AY Podcast: Hold plank pose.

Me: Yum, this coffee is delicious. Wait, what? Plank? Oh, right, I'm doing yoga!

AY Podcast: Hold warrior two pose. Open your hips. Energize your fingers.

Me: Ah, this is great! I feel so energized. Hey, I wonder if I got any emails...? I better check. Could be important.

AY Podcast: Transition into an inversion.

Me: Wow, there's a lot of dust under the couch. Have I EVER swept under there?

AY Podcast: Come into fish pose. Breathe.

Me: (walking out of the kitchen, eating a bowl of cereal) Geez, is that thing still going?
So, um, yeah. Yoga at home is not an easy task for the easily-distracted. I'm working on it though! I much prefer going to the studio, but until I can fit it back into my budget, I guess I'll use this as a chance to practice my focus and concentration.

This is my favorite yoga pose. Does that make me lazy?

Fact #62: A week of nonstop awesome has 8 days

My week of nonstop awesome continues, with perhaps the awesomest thing ever. . .

The Steel City Big Pour!!!!

I have a performance of Much Ado at 2, then I'll run home and change before I head over to Construction Junction for some tasty beers and foods!

Eeeeeee! I'm so excited! There will be 35 craft breweries there, and food from 20 local restaurants. Plus art, live music, and a kegerator raffle! It's a lot to tackle, so I've laid out a plan of action:

Laurel's handy beer drinking map.

It's gonna be. . . what's the word? Oh, I know. Awesome.

Fact #61: Like I really need another excuse to be lazy

Remember the Spirit of Pittsburgh Half Marathon that I signed up to run? I just got an email telling me that it's been canceled!
*pretends to flip a table over*
*pretends to punch someone in the face*
"Oh yeah, Spirit of Pittsburgh? Well, you're ugly and stupid!"
"Waaaaah!!! Why, why???? I've been training for this race my whole liiiiiife!!!"
Ahem.

It really is a bummer though, I was looking forward to it a lot. I have no idea why it was canceled -- they just said it wasn't going to happen and offered to transfer my registration to a Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon or refund my money. I'm just taking the refund, because I'm too busy/poor to travel to another city for a race this fall.

But seriously, what am I gonna do to get my butt out the door now??

Fact #42: Two weeks??? Where does the time go?

We open Much Ado in two weeks. Actually 13 days, but let's just round up to a nice even two weeks, shall we? Mentally, I've just hit that extra special place between, "Plenty of time," and, "No time!!!" (It's a very small window -- in fact, sometimes it only lasts for a few seconds.)

We're starting to stitch the pieces together, which is always a scary and exciting part of the process. It's scary because stumbling through transitions, getting lost in the middle, or realizing you're somehow supposed to be in two places at once can feel like taking a giant step backward. But it's exciting and obviously necessary because this is the point when things start to build. One scene feeds into the next, one beat informs the next. It starts to make sense as a whole.

Beatrice is coming along. I'm finding her thread, stitching her together too.

Kind of like this. ------------------------------>

But less Tim Burton-y.

One thing I've been surprised at is how different 'my' Beatrice is from the perception I had of her before we started rehearsals. She's less carefree than I'd thought. She's more practical. Her wit and humor are still there, but they exist as a counterbalance to an opposite side. She even has a moment toward the end of the show that the assistant director referred to the other day as her "Lady Macbeth" moment.

But there's lots more work to do. Some scenes are starting to flow nicely, but a few still feel like banging my head against a wall. Luckily I've still got a little while before there's "No time!!!!"

Fact #39: Six Degrees of Beer, Obama, and Joel McHale

I subscribe to the @FatHeadsPGH Twitter feed. I like getting updates on what beers they've got on tap.

Yesterday I wanted to see if they had anything new, so I clicked on their Twitter site. Here's what I found out:
  • I follow @FatHeadsPGH. Twitter tells me that @BarackObama also follows them.
  • And @FatheadsPGH and I both follow @BarackObama and @JoelMcHale.
  • @BarackObama follows @FatHeadsPGH but NOT @JoelMcHale.
  • However, @BarackObama does follow me.
  • But @JoelMcHale does not.
This is the world we live in, people.

Also, Fat Heads just tapped Tarrapin's Gamma Ray Wheat Wine, which sounds super tasty.
